Those in the Augusta area looking for both the taste of authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex food won’t have to look very far with a new Broad Street restaurant that will cater to those cravings.

“It’s half and half because you can get your Tex-Mex plates, but we still have those authentic choices that people can choose from,” said Anna Chavez, who serves as the operating manager at El Paso Tacos and Tequilas.

El Paso Tacos and Tequila, which opened for business in late May, is a family-operated restaurant that serves authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex food, as well as drinks such as margaritas and martinis.

The restaurant is located at 1167 Broad St., which is the former location of Mellow Mushroom.

Some food options the restaurant includes are tacos, nachos, carne asada, fajitas, vegetarian cheese enchiladas, chalupas, burritos and more.

El Paso Tacos and Tequila, which began in the summer of 2020, opened up its first location in Valdosta, Georgia, before opening in other location across the Southeast including Athens, Spartanburg and Sumter.

The business originally started in Texas and there are plans to open their first location in North Carolina.

Chavez said when people first walk into the restaurant, they might think they are just Tex-Mex, but they also serve authentic Mexican food. They also have a seafood selection and burgers.

“We have some true authentic dishes on our menu that a lot of people wouldn't expect us to have,” she said.

Chavez said the El Paso Tacos and Tequila started with her brother.

“Ever since I graduated high school I have been working with him inside the restaurants,” she said. “I kind of help out wherever is needed.”

Chavez said the reason why her brother began the business was because of her dad, who worked in restaurants after coming from Mexico. She said her brother started working in a restaurant when he was 17, which led him to create El Paso Tacos and Tequila.
