The Cooke County Democratic Party Convention met over the weekend to elect delegates and consider resolutions to the state convention, which is set for June 6-8 in El Paso.

County Chair Sherman Moore presided and Pat Ledbetter was elected secretary. The county party passed several resolutions — including expanding Medicaid coverage and funding for rural mental health services. Party members called for state officials to take action on both proposals to improve rural healthcare, help hospitals and ease burdens on locals sheriffs and others.

The group expressed unanimous opposition to any school voucher proposals “that would reduce already inadequate funding for public schools” and use public money to subsidize private education, Moore stated in a press release.

Moore said teacher pay raises were another priority. A county resolution noted that “the state had the funds to provide a substantial increase, but it failed because of the bipartisan refusal to support the voucher program demanded by the Republican leadership,” Moore added. The group wanted to assert its unanimous support for our public school teachers, especially given the difficulty the state has in recruiting and keeping its teachers.

Moore played a recorded message from Ernest Lineberger, the Democratic candidate for Congressional District 26. He is a retired Naval officer who served on nuclear-power warships, including USS Nimitz. He has worked in semiconductor manufacturing at Texas Instruments in Dallas.

Lineberger spoke against obstructionism and misinformation in current politics. He also expressed support for affordable health care, responsible gun ownership, jobs with living wages and improving education.

The Cooke County Democrats will host a barbecue Saturday, May 18, at 4 p.m. in Gainesville’s B.P. Douglas Park. The public is invited to meet Democratic candidates and enjoy a free picnic.
