El Paso City Council eyes ICE camp closure, Transmountain truck ban
El Paso City Council to weigh Transmountain Road truck ban, closure of ICE Camp East Montana and new travel disclosures. The El Paso City Council is set to consider a proposal from West Side city Rep. Alejandra Chavez that could limit or even ban semitrailer traffic on Transmountain Road following a deadly collision on Oct. 19. The proposal includes collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to explore measures to restrict heavy truck traffic on the road, including establishing alternative designated truck routes. This comes after a report revealed that members of the El Paso County Commissioners spent nearly $234,000 taxpayer dollars on travel expenses between fiscal 2022 and May 2026. The City Council may also consider calling for the closure of Camp East Montana, the largest immigrant detention facility in the US.
