New Mexico Democrats prepare for 2028 presidential primary with Matanza celebration
Senator Ben Ray Luján hosted a "Fourth in the Nation Matanza Rally," as New Mexico prepares to be the fourth state to hold a Democratic presidential primary in 2028. New Mexico Democrats celebrated their new standing among the Democratic National Committee at a Matanza celebration in Albuquerque, ahead of the 2028 presidential primary on February 15, 2028. Many Democrats believe this will force presidential candidates to focus more on Hispanic and minority voters. Senator Ben Ray Luján, who attended the event, said the early date will put New Mexico into the national political spotlight. Other notable attendees included Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Arizona), former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, and Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D Maryland).
