HOUSTON, TX (KIAH) – LawnStarter has released its 2023 rankings of the dirtiest cities in America and Houston tops their list. LawnStarter research was done after that year’s winter holiday season. They evaluated over 150 of America’s biggest cities, with focus on pollution, living conditions, infrastructure, and consumer satisfaction. Despite the odd honor, Houston’s been called a lot of names. “Screwston”, “Bayou City”, “Silicon Bayou”, “Choke City”, “Ozone City”, even “Mutt City”. So, the designation as the ‘dirtiest city’ aligns with its proud identity as part of the “Dirty South.”
• Greenhouse-gas emissions: 3rd in metric tons of CO2e from large facilities per capita
• Cockroach infestations: 1st in the share of homes with signs of cockroaches
• Sewage disposal breakdowns: 5th in the share of homes experiencing sewage issues
• Junk yards: 1st in the number of junk yards
• Resident dissatisfaction with pollution: 22nd in the share of residents unhappy with pollution
While these statistics shed light on challenges local residents face today, Houston’s inclusion in the “Dirty South” carries a legacy that goes beyond cleanliness. The term “Dirty South” signifies a rich musical heritage, resilient hustle culture, and gritty street life spirit that over the years, has defined the southern United States, particularly in cities like Houston and others along the Gulf coast.
Houston has been a hub in the “Dirty South” hip hop scene, producing influential artists like Scarface, UGK and Lil’ Flip. More recently, Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion and Travis Scott. Local music captures the raw and unfiltered reality of life in the South, turning struggles into art and H-town pride.
Grit and resilience make us stronger together
From hurricanes that shatter downtown skyscrapers, to inner city tornadoes, Houston has been through a lot of mess when it comes to weather and crime. The term “Dirty South” embodies Houston’s strong resilience to stay weather aware then it comes to natural disasters. Houstonians also come together to help one another when it comes to recovering from such events with unpretentious character. Houston’s ability to flourish despite environmental and infrastructural challenges speaks to the strength and power of its residents.
Houston’s position as the dirtiest city should serve as a wake-up call for action and rise. Together, city officials, including Houston’s mayor, still in his first year after being elected; and residents, native and newcomers, are already mobilizing efforts to address pollution, improve living conditions, and improve infrastructure. This commitment to progress ensures that Houston can continue to grow and thrive for years to come.
Local organizations and city leaders are working on projects to reduce emissions, clean up junk yards, and improve waste management systems. Just look at how fast organized cleanup is after major weather events. These efforts aim to create a healthier, more sustainable environment for all residents.
People in Houston know we’re stronger together and by raising awareness about the challenges we can also promote even more community commitment. Houston may embrace being called “Bayou City” because we are. Houston also aims to turn its “dirty” reputation into a narrative of transformation and improvement, which is a constant for this big, bold and fast moving city.
Ultimately, while Houston may have been named the dirtiest city in America by LawnStarter, its identity as part of the “Dirty South” is a badge of cultural richness and resilience. Embracing this double-dealing, Houston is already addressing its environmental challenges head-on, while celebrating the vibrant, gritty spirit that makes us unique.
