The City of El Paso's Department of Public Health (DPH) celebrates National Public Health Week from April 1-7.

During the first week in April, the DPH will host various events as part of a weeklong celebration to educate the community, recognize the contributions of public health, and highlight issues that are important to improving our Nation’s public health.

This year’s theme “Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health” is meant to remind El Pasoans that the community's health-- as well as the health of the planet-- depends on every individual doing their part.

On Tuesday, DPH held walks across El Paso to promote "Healthy Neighborhoods."

They held a Doggie Walk at Joey Barraza and Vino Memorial Park at 11270 McCombs Street from 11 a.m. to noon where they had Animal Services' mobile adoption unit offering free microchips.

Then, a Glow Walk from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Vista del Valle Park at 1300 Hawkins Boulevard, with raffles and activities.

The schedule for the rest of the week is as follows:

• Trail clean-up to promote biodiversity, ecosystem balance and resilience against climate change impacts

• Beginner hike will be a 1.9-mile round trip. A pre-hike safety brief will be given to volunteers by park staff before starting the cleanup

• Raffles will be given

Thursday — "New Tools and Innovations/Future of Public Health"

• DPH staff will provide educational topics for senior citizens at the Fabens Senior Center

• Topics such as: How to use their cell phones to record their medications, add emergency contacts and maneuver settings.

• DPH staff will provide a Sexual Reproductive Health presentation to youth program participants at the Pride Center.
