The Las Cruces Police Department is celebrating World Autism Awareness Day by providing free window decals to anyone with autism spectrum disorder, as well as the parents and caretakers of children with autism.

While April is designated as World Autism Month, Tuesday marks World Autism Awareness Day, and to celebrate the occasion LCPD is offering free window decals to the community's autism population, in a bid to help officers work more holistically with the community.

When placed prominently in a window, the decals help alert police that someone either in a car or a residence has autism spectrum disorder, which in turn helps mitigate misunderstandings during traffic stops or home visits.

LCPD’s “Supporting Autism Awareness” puzzle-piece window decals are brightly colored and in the shape of the departmental patch worn by all uniformed personnel.

The decals are available for free to anyone with autism spectrum disorder or those who care for somebody with autism and can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Las Cruces Police Department, located at 217 E. Picacho Ave.
