EL PASO – In a riveting matchup under the Thursday night lights at Helen of Troy Field, Anna Sample delivered a game-changing grand slam in the sixth inning, catapulting the UTEP Softball team to a dramatic 6-5 victory over Jacksonville State.

UTEP improves to 18-9 (4-3 Conference USA) while Jax State drops to 12-21 (2-6 CUSA).

Jax State took an early lead in the top of the second inning through a bases-loaded walk and a powerful 2 RBI double, putting them ahead 3-0. However, UTEP fought back fiercely in the bottom of the fourth inning as Ajia Richard reached on a fielder’s choice and Kenna Collett’s single set the stage for Marijn Crouwel’s clutch RBI-double that brought Richard home, narrowing the gap to 3-1. The momentum shifted further in the bottom of the sixth when Lexi Morales, Richard, and Crouwel loaded the bases, and Halle Hogan’s RBI-single scored Morales, maintaining the bases loaded. Then, Anna Sample’s grand slam over the scoreboard electrified the stadium, propelling the Miners into a 6-3 lead. Despite a late 2-run surge from Jax State in the top of the seventh, with UTEP’s Zaylie Calderon stepping in as pitching relief and securing crucial strikeouts, UTEP held on for the win. Taja Felder earned her ninth win of the season, while Calderon notched her seventh save.
