Dr. You Liu, an associate professor of finance at UTRGV, gave an in-depth presentation at "The State of the Regional Workforce Conference." Dr. Yu Liu, associate professor of finance at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Economics and Finance, delivered a presentation at "The State of the Regional Workforce Conference" aimed at providing a historical perspective on the RGV labor force to inform regional strategy regarding economic opportunities, industrial shifts, and future workforce development. Despite rapid population growth and emerging high-tech and industrial sectors, Liu highlighted deep structural challenges such as significant gaps in higher education attainment, low labor force participation, and per-capita income levels. Liu highlighted that the region's population has nearly quadrupled since 1970, with nearly 28% of Valley residents under the age of 18. The McAllen and Brownsville metropolitan areas now account for approximately 467,000 payroll jobs, roughly 2.6 times the total recorded in the 1990s.
