Albuquerque Voters Weigh Arts Center Spending Rule
Albuquerque almost missed this vote entirely. Now it's back on the ballot. Albuquerque voters will decide on a measure that would remove voters' veto power over a downtown performing arts center. The measure would repeal a rule that requires voter approval before the city spends more than $10 million on such a facility. The Albuquerque City Council unanimously voted to put the question before voters in the November 3 election. The proposal was originally intended for 2025 ballots but was accidentally omitted before resurfacing this year. Councilor Joaquín Baca, who has pushed for the change, argues that removing the $10m threshold would give city leaders more flexibility. Critics argue that other costly or delayed city projects should be kept in the loop.
