Borderland Mythbusters: El Paso Actually Invented 'Friday Night Lights'

The Lady on the Hill, El Paso High School, is home to R.R. Jones Stadium, where Texas Friday night football was born in 1928 with the Tigers defeating Alpine 26 to 0 under newly installed lights. El Paso, Texas, has been credited with inventing the tradition of Friday night football under the lights, starting in 1928. The tradition began at R.R. Jones Stadium in El Paso, a historic high school campus that has been a landmark since 1916. The stadium hosted the first Friday night game in the state of Texas in 1928, attracting over 10,000 fans and lighting the field with 80 bulbs of 300 watts each. It became the first stadium in the Texas to have permanent outdoor lighting for sporting events and hosted the Sun Bowl games from 1935 to 1937. Despite efforts from other Texas cities to claim Texas football as their own tradition, El Paso was ahead of them.
