Rare Santa Fe tornado neared 110 mph, NWS says
The high-end EF1 damaged homes and uprooted trees Saturday night; no injuries were reported. The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has identified a rare tornado in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which produced winds up to 110 mph. The tornado damaged homes, cars, and trees in the Via Caballero neighborhood, damaging houses, cars and pulling trees out of the ground. The National Weather Services investigated the damage, rating the tornado as a 'high-end EF1" and may have been one of only five tornadoes in the last century to hit the area. Some residents have questioned why a National Weather Warning tornado warning was not issued until about 7 p.m., when the twister may have already been on the ground and developed quickly. While New Mexico sees an average of 9 to 10 tornadoes each year, most occur on the state's eastern plains.
