El Paso Zoo will no longer see an elephant exhibit in its future due to a shortage of the exotic animal, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums recently confirmed.

The AZA confirmed in an accreditation report on the El Paso Zoo that after the 71-year-old elephant Savannah died earlier this year, there will no longer be an elephant exhibit.

Savannah the elephant spent 18 years at the zoo and died in January at the age of 71, due to an extreme case of arthritis.

The zoo has since replaced the exhibit with a one-horned Indian Rhino.

However, news of El Paso no longer having an elephant exhibit has disappointed Borderland residents.

“I think it's unfortunate. I mean, when anybody comes to the zoo, I think they always look forward to seeing certain animals like an elephant,” said resident Paul Casner.

Another resident, Eddie Garcia, said that he believes this change will impact how the zoo is valued.

“It’s going to be very sad. It's going to be a very drastic change towards the zoo's culture, and everything,” said Garcia.

Residents also believe that elephants are a fundamental part of the zoo experience.

“[People] learn about, you know, the animals in their habitat and where they are from and the kinds of food that they eat and very importantly, how to protect them," stated Casner.

“It's a very crazy experience to see how big an animal like that can be in real life. And then at the same time, if they get very close to you as well, it's a whole different experience if you actually get to hear them and see them interact with other animals," said Garcia.
