Albuquerque Sunport Adds 5 New Sculptures by NM Artists

Five new sculptures by New Mexico artists now greet travelers at the Albuquerque Sunport. Albuquerque International Sunport has added five new sculptures by New Mexico artists to its Arrivals area as part of its ongoing public art expansion. The pieces are part of Phase III of the Sunport's Reimagined Public Art Program, which aims to place freestanding sculptures where passengers will first see them. The project was launched through an open call in February inviting New Mexico artist to submit existing outdoor sculptures. The total project budget of $250,000 was designed to place up to five freestands sculptures at the Arrivals level. Each piece must meet ADA safety standards for permanent display in a high-traffic public environment. The airport, which is owned and operated by the City of Albuquerque's Aviation Department and sees over 5 million passengers a year, framed the new works as the latest step in growing its reputation for public art and traveler experience.
