The Consulate General of Mexico is set to launch the first El Paso Science Festival at the El Paso Convention Center on April 6 and 7, supporting the growth of innovation and science spaces for young people in the border community.

The event will feature migrant farmworker-turned-astronaut, Jose Hernandez, as well as a screening of the film based on his life, "A Million Miles Away."

Likewise, there will be more than 70 interactive activities and exhibits suitable for all ages, making it an inclusive, fun and educational experience for everyone.

"Come expecting to learn a lot, but also have a lot of fun," said Enrique Gomez, Co-Director and Founder of El Paso Science Festival.

Eric Pearson, president and CEO of El Paso Community Foundation -- a co-sponsor of the event -- said, "This is an opportunity for kids to see science not as a subject they have to do in school, or homework they have to do at home, but something they can experiment with and be inspired by, and see themselves in the future."

Gomez's inspiration to start the festival came from his own childhood, growing up in Juarez "without many possibilities," or even a phone, and ultimately going on to work for NASA, programming computers onboard the space shuttles.

"I thought it was not fair that all these beautiful minds of our kids are not being able to fulfill their full potential, so this is what inspired that," said Gomez. "We want to create this space where these kids can see that this is exciting -- not only exciting, this is great jobs."

El Paso's event marks the second time Gomez has organized a Science Festival, the first of which was in Austin 12 years ago.

The El Paso Science Festival is free to attend and will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6-7 at the El Paso Convention Center.
