El Paso City Council eyes ICE camp closure, Transmountain truck ban
El Paso City Council to weigh Transmountain Road truck ban, closure of ICE Camp East Montana and new travel disclosures. The El Paso City Council is considering a ban on semitrailer traffic on Transmountain Road following a fatal crash on Oct. 19. The proposal comes from West Side city Rep. Alejandra Chavez, who also proposed a proposal to collaborate with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to restrict heavy truck traffic on the road. A separate proposal calls for the closure of the Camp East Montana immigrant detention facility due to health and safety concerns. Another agenda item seeks to require public disclosure of taxpayer-funded travel by City Council members. This comes after a report by Channel 7-KIA found that nearly $234,000 of taxpayer dollars spent on travel between May 2022 and May 2026.
