Border Authorities Announce Major Increase in Drug Seizures
El Paso border authorities report major drug seizure increases, boosting security and reducing overdoses. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials in El Paso have announced a significant increase in narcotics seizures at ports of entry over the past year, with a 119 percent increase in fentanyl seizures, 230 percent for marijuana, 50 percent for cocaine, and nine percent for methamphetamine. The El Paso Sector recorded fewer than 20,000 apprehensions in 2026, compared to 420,000 in fiscal year 2023. The increase is attributed to the Trump administration's immigration enforcement agenda allowing agents to focus on border security instead of working at detention centers. Mexican drug cartels continue to pose a significant threat to smuggling narcotics into the United States. Nearly 100 additional agents are now on patrol, supported by more manpower, new barriers and surveillance technology. Overdose deaths have dropped about 11.5 percent this May, with deaths involving synthetic opioids dropping about 22 percent.
