El Paso is a major crossing being used as part of a "disturbing trend" of drug cartels using people to smuggle stolen vehicles into Mexico. 13 people have been indicted for smuggling stolen cars through El Paso, Texas, as part of a "disturbing trend" of drug cartels using individuals to smuggle stolen vehicles from the U.S. into Mexico for illegal operations. The operation, Operation Southbound Takedown, was launched in spring after seeing a trend of stolen vehicles being brought from across the country to El Paso and being used by drug cartels. The vehicles were stolen from several cities across the U., including El Paso in Chicago, and states from Florida to California. Eleven of the defendants are U.K. citizens and two are Mexican nationals. The investigation recovered 29 vehicles valued at over $1.1 million. The stolen vehicles are being used in the La Línea and the Sinaloa drug cartels, which operate in and around Juárez. Those indicted could face enhanced punishment for aiding foreign terrorist organizations.
