National Weather Service warns of increasing wind gusts, potential dust on Easter

Wind gusts will grow stronger throughout the day, reaching up to 40 miles per hour by 3 p.m. El Paso National Weather Service has issued a warning for a windy Easter Sunday, with the strongest gusts expected in the afternoon. The National Weather Coordination Meteorologist, Jason Laney, warned that paper plates, napkins, and anything that's not tied down could cause problems. Winds will increase throughout the day, reaching up to 40 miles per hour by 3 p.m. Northeast El Paso will be the most affected by these winds, followed by West El Paso. Fire danger is also being monitored for parks with elevated grills. Despite the windy forecast, Laney said confidence is high in the forecast.

El Pasoans should brace themselves for a windy Easter Sunday, with the strongest gusts in the afternoon, according to the El Paso National Weather Service.

As some head to morning Mass around 9 a.m., the winds will be the calmest at 25 to 35 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the upper 70s, with some clouds in the sky.

Wind gusts will grow stronger throughout the day, reaching up to 40 miles per hour by 3 p.m., when most El Pasoans celebrate with an Easter egg hunt or cookout at a park.

According to NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist Jason Laney, Easter Sunday could be dusty.

“Paper plates, napkins and anything that’s not tied down will have some problems,” Laney said. “The winds will certainly be an inconvenience.”

With winds coming in from the Southwest, Northeast El Paso will bear the brunt of the strongest winds, followed by West El Paso.

Another thing to keep in mind is fire danger, Laney said.

“I would think at the various parks with the grills that are elevated above ground, those would be okay,” he said. “But be careful of any sparks in the area.”

Unfortunately, Laney said the windy forecast looks promising for those hoping the weather might improve.

“These types of weather systems are pretty predictable for us,” Laney said. “The confidence is high in this particular forecast.”

El Paso could also see some rainfall Sunday night, heading into Monday morning.
