While migrant crossings in New Mexico are frequent, migrants are unintentionally ending up in schools as they look for ways to evade U.S Border Patrol agents, according to a spokesperson with the El Paso Border Patrol Sector.

The Superintendent of Gadsden ISD Travis Dempsey said there have been two incidents in the past week of migrants entering the Santa Teresa Middle School.

Dempsey said the first incident happened March 20 and the second happened Wednesday which prompted placing the campus in secure mode for about 20 minutes and eventually led to the apprehension of six migrants by Border Patrol agents.

“It is concerning and it does at some level interrupt our educational process when we do things of this nature,” said Dempsey.

Refugio Corrales, a spokesperson with CBP said the migrants they encounter in Santa Teresa and Sunland Park are often avoiding being arrested by agents.

“The Santa Teresa Middle School is one of the areas where these migrants jump into without thinking of where they’re going through because they’re trying to evade arrest,” said Corrales.

A parent of the Gadsden ISD shared she was forced to go into secure mode during last week’s incident at the campus.

“We’re a little nervous because with the fear and nerves migrants have of being caught by immigration officials, we don’t know if they’d do something to our students,” parent Maria Gallegos said.

Meantime a grandparent of Gadsden ISD said the issue of migrant crossings is getting out of hand.

“It's really bad because we’re with the concern that something could happen to the kids,” Lorenzo Gandara said.

Dempsey said Santa Teresa MS has one school resource officer provided by the Sunland Park Police Department and the district’s policy is to immediately report migrants to the Border Patrol.

CBP agent Corrales added there are a higher number of agents in the area during the school shift to provide an extra watch.

Dempsey added in addition to the school resource officer, they also use their security cameras to stay vigilant of migrant crossings.

The U.S El Paso Border Patrol sector provided the following statement on Wednesday's incident.
